  • Treaty could make people ‘feel more divided’, Victorian opposition leader says, as Coalition withdraws support

The Victorian opposition leader, John Pesutto, has refused to say when the Coalition decided it would withdraw its support for a treaty with the state’s Indigenous people, ending years of bipartisanship on the issue.

Pesutto on Monday told reporters the Coalition had discussed the issue internally and with stakeholders “on an ongoing basis for many months” before deciding to change its position.

“We felt that the time to make an announcement was now,” he said.

The way these racist pieces of shit continue to use Aboriginal sovereignty as a tool to create division (which it does not, inherently, rather it is a right owed to First Nations globally) is indicative of the general bullshit that is Australian politics.

  • Megafires are increasing with climate change

Just six days in to the northern hemisphere summer of 2023, the skyline in New York City was stained in a sepia smoke haze.

It was streaming from across the border, where, what became Canada’s most widespread fires in history, were raging.

And the fires did not let up for months.

According to the latest public records, the Canadian wildfires of 2023 have razed 18.5 million hectares of land to date — nearly triple the previous record.

I don’t know, but maybe the Labor party could stop investing in new coal and gas projects?

Maybe they could listen to the advice of Elders and knowledge holders? We need better land management practices.

Oh and less flaccid bourgeois career politicians. Resign, Albo. You are literally committing genocide (also against the future).

  • Arctic zombie viruses in Siberia could spark terrifying new pandemic

Humanity is facing a bizarre new pandemic threat, scientists have warned. Ancient viruses frozen in the Arctic permafrost could one day be released by Earth’s warming climate and unleash a major disease outbreak, they say.

Strains of these Methuselah microbes – or zombie viruses as they are also known – have already been isolated by researchers who have raised fears that a new global medical emergency could be triggered – not by an illness new to science but by a disease from the distant past.

Amazing. But tech bros say they can save us from climate change. Fuck me people. Take. Action. Now.

Waste of space Labor leaders are hopeful they’ll be dead, or able to use this as an election issue, by the time this hits. Fuck I hate “democracy” — capitalism and narcissists ruin everything.

  • Senegal excludes opposition leader Sonko from presidential candidate list

Senegal’s Constitutional Council on Saturday, January 20, published a final list of 20 candidates for the February 25 presidential election that excludes jailed opposition leader Ousmane Sonko and Karim Wade, the son of former president Abdoulaye Wade.

Those listed include Prime Minister Amadou Ba, chosen by President Macky Sall as his successor after Sall announced in July that he would not seek a third term. Also named were former prime ministers and rivals Idrissa Seck and Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne, the ex-mayor of Dakar Khalifa Sall and Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye, presented as a substitute candidate for Sonko. Faye, 43, a member of Sonko’s dissolved party, is also detained but has not yet been tried.

The published list of candidates also includes two women, gynecologist Rose Wardini and entrepreneur Anta Babacar Ngom.

    Hmm.

  • Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Drops Out Of Presidential Race

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who entered the 2024 presidential race with a bankroll rivaling that of coup-attempting former President Donald Trump, dropped his bid for the GOP nomination on Sunday.

The announcement comes just days after DeSantis claimed he had gotten his “ticket punched” to continue his campaign despite finishing a distant second to Trump in the Iowa caucuses. Late polls in that state showed that DeSantis could finish third behind former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. When DeSantis ultimately finished just two percentage points ahead of her, he tried to spin it as a victory ― even though he had previously said he had to win Iowa to win the nomination.

When you’re a fascist you’re only ever one step behind a fascist. This guy and Haley with their big talk about republicanism will both bow out down to emperor trump — if the US populace is stupid enough to re-elect him. It’ll probably be the last election they have.

  • Gen Z is prioritizing living over working because they’ve seen ‘the legacy of broken promises’ in corporate America, a future-of-work expert says

Gen Z is choosing to “work to live” rather than “live to work,” like previous generations, because they’re reaping fewer rewards for their hard work, an expert on the future of work told Business Insider.

Ravin Jesuthasan, the global leader for transformation services at the consulting giant Mercer and a future-of-work expert, spoke with BI at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, this week and touched on the topic of Gen Z in the workplace.

Gen Z “has some very different attitudes to work” from older generations, Jesuthasan said, because it’s one of the first generations whose members won’t have wealth greater than that of their parents or grandparents. Additionally, they have already experienced huge disruptions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

    Girl bye.

  • Ethnic killings in one Sudan city left up to 15,000 dead

Between 10,000 and 15,000 people were killed in one city in Sudan’s West Darfur region last year in ethnic violence by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied Arab militia, according to a United Nations report seen by Reuters on Friday.

In the report to the U.N. Security Council, independent U.N. sanctions monitors attributed the toll in El Geneina to intelligence sources and contrasted it with the U.N. estimate that about 12,000 people have been killed across Sudan since war erupted on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese army and the RSF.

The monitors also described as “credible” accusations that the United Arab Emirates had provided military support to the RSF “several times per week” via Amdjarass in northern Chad. A top Sudanese general accused the UAE in November of backing the RSF war effort.

It’s global. The racist genocidal and “ethic cleansing” regimes are very seriously on the rise. The west sponsors so much of this and politicians at home just keep reinforcing they’re on the right white side.

It’d be nice to see some of this language applied to the genocidal Israelis.

  • Iran’s IRGC says 5 members killed in Israeli attack on Syria’s Damascus

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says five of its “military advisers” have been killed in an Israeli air raid on a residential building in Syria’s capital, Damascus.

Syrian state media SANA said the attack on Saturday took place in the Mazzeh neighbourhood. It said “Israeli aggression” targeted the building.

Iran also blamed Israel for the attack, saying it “reserves the right to respond”.

“The Islamic Republic will not leave the Zionist regime’s crimes unanswered,” Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi said in a statement broadcast on state media.

Israel literally won’t stop. Sick people.
